Water Safety Summer Challenge - Spring 2021

To kick off Water Safety month we encourage anyone and everyone to participate in our Water Safety Summer Challenge 2021. Participants must register ahead of time and will then pick up their challenge cards to be completed between May 15th 2021 and July 15th 2021. Challenge cards will be available for pick up at the Dennis Malone Aquatics Center located at 325 Mix Street. Cards may also be picked up at Youth Services located at 51 High Street as well as the Parks and Recreation office at city hall located at 111 N Main Street. There are 9 challenges that must be completed and validated by our aquatics division staff via photo/video proof. All participants are encouraged to use "hash tags" to share their challenge photos and videos on social media. This year, our hash tag will be: #IPreventDrowningBristolCT




Challenge #1:

Participant must wear a life jacket while using any type of water craft. "Don't just pack it, wear your jacket" - American Red Cross.

Challenge #2:

Participant must be seen as a "designated water watcher" in a privately owned swimming pool

Challenge #3:

Participant must show using a privately owned swimming pool with a "self-locking gate" 

Challenge #4:

Participant must provide proof of taking part in a formal swim lesson program (at any location) within the time period of the water safety challenge. 

Challenge #5:

Participant must provide proof of swimming in a privately swimming owned pool, equipped with pool rescue equipment in case of emergency.

Challenge #6:

Participant must show video/photo proof of "What to do in an emergency?" The video/photos must show a time line of steps of what to do in an emergency situation. Simulating calling 911 and helping the victim must be part of the time line (PLEASE DO NOT ACTUALLY CALL 911). 

Challenge #7:

Participant must demonstrate the American Red Cross: "Throw before you go" technique to help a swimmer in distress. 

Challenge #8:

Participant must show proof of swimming in a designated swim area with lifeguard supervision.

Challenge #9:

Participant must document their knowledge of at least 3 pool rules using photo/video proof.

After all 9 challenges have been met, participants will turn in their cards for a prize. Limited quantities may be available. Prizes will be awarded on a first come first serve basis.
